Har Ki Dun means "Valley of Gods" in the local dialect. Standing in the valley at sunrise, with Swargarohini (6,252m) glowing golden in the first light, you understand why. This is one of the oldest trekking routes in the Garhwal Himalaya, and one of the most beautiful. The trek starts from Sankri and follows the Supin River upstream. The trail passes through ancient villages, Osla, Gangad, Seema, where the wooden architecture is centuries old and the people speak a language closer to Tibetan than Hindi. Temples here predate the trek by a thousand years. The oldest is dedicated to Duryodhana, a rare sight in a country where most temples honour his rivals. This is not a difficult trek. Altitude is moderate (max 3,700m), the trail is well-established, and gradients are gentle. It's a family trek, one of the few in the Indian Himalaya that children and older adults can do comfortably. The valley floor is a vast meadow with the Supin River winding through. In spring (April-May), rhododendrons bloom and the valley floor becomes a carpet of flowers. In autumn, oak leaves turn gold and the sky is impossibly clear. Swargarohini Peak dominates the northern skyline, the mountain the Pandavas climbed to heaven. At sunrise, it glows. The entire valley holds its breath.

How to reach

Take an overnight bus from Delhi ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun (6-7 hrs). We pick up from Dehradun and drive to Sankri village (190 km, 7-8 hrs). The drive follows the Yamuna and Tons rivers through the Jaunsar-Bawar region. Sankri is the trailhead, guesthouses, a few dhabas, and the start of the Supin valley trail.

The story behind it

Har Ki Dun translates to "Valley of Gods." According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas passed through this valley on their final journey to heaven (swargarohan). Swargarohini Peak is believed to be the very peak they climbed to ascend. The villages of Osla and Gangad are among the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the Himalaya, with evidence dating back 2,000 years. The Duryodhana temple in Osla is one of very few in India dedicated to the Kaurava king, a local tradition that holds Duryodhana as a righteous ruler.

Health & fitness

This is an easy-moderate trek suitable for families and beginners. Max altitude 3,700m, AMS is uncommon but still possible. Fitness: walk 5 km briskly without stopping. Daily walking 8-12 km on well-established trails. No technical sections. Children 10+ can do this comfortably. Older adults with good fitness can also manage, trails are gentle and camps are comfortable. Not suitable for: severe respiratory conditions, pregnancy. Otherwise very accessible.
